What Proposition 65 is
Proposition 65 is a California right-to-know law, formally the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. It requires businesses to warn Californians before exposing them to chemicals on a state-maintained list.
A Proposition 65 warning is not a statement that a product is unsafe, that it violates a safety standard, or that it exceeds any federal limit. It means the product can expose you to a listed chemical, and California requires you to be told.
Reducing exposure
Ordinary sensible practice covers most of it: do not put fasteners in your mouth, wash your hands after handling them, and keep them away from small children - a loose screw is a choking hazard long before it is a chemical one.
